Biography

Hugh Roach is a forward, whose position is hooker. While Roach may be smaller than a traditional rake, he more than makes up for his lack of height with his agility and mobility around the breakdown and set-pieces.

Roach hails from Sydney, and attended Newington College. Roach represented the Australian Schoolboys on 11 occasions between 2009 and 2010 and remains one of the most capped schoolboys' rugby players in Australian history.

In 2011, he was selected in the Australian U20 squad, making three appearances against Fiji, Samoa and New Zealand.

He earned another four Australian U20 caps when he was selected to play in the 2012 Junior World Championships against Scotland, Argentina and France.

Roach first joined Eastwood as a senior in 2013 where he quickly made a name for himself in the Shute Shield.

He was announced as Rookie of the Year during his opening season of the first grade competition, following in the footsteps of previous winners and Waratah teammates Bernard Foley, Jed Holloway and Greg Petersen.

His impressive form saw him picked up by the Force where he made his provincial debut against the British & Irish Lions in June 2013.

Roach played for the NSW Waratahs between 2013-2018, playing 41 games, including wining a Super Rugby Championship in 2014 against the Crusaders.

Roach signed with the Melbourne Rebels for the 2019 season and frustratingly suffered a shoulder injury which stunted his start to the season. Roach made his Rebels debut in Round 8 against the Sunwolves and played every game until Round 16, before the return of Wallaby hooker Jordan Uelese and form of reigning Players' Player Anaru Rangi saw the front rower unlucky to not be selected for the final two matches of 2019.
